Can You Sell AI Art on Etsy?
By Shirt Bazaar · Updated
Yes. Etsy lets you sell AI-generated art made from your own original prompts, listed as designed by you, but you must say in the listing description that AI was used. Etsy does not allow selling AI prompts on their own. Expect a 20 cent listing fee and a 6.5 percent transaction fee per sale.
Does Etsy allow AI-generated art?
Etsy allows it under conditions. Its Creativity Standards sort listings by how much the seller did. Work generated by AI tools from a seller's own original prompts counts as a seller-prompted AI creation, which sits in the Designed by a seller category. Etsy's Seller Handbook says Etsy will keep allowing sellers to use their original prompts together with AI tools.
The condition that matters most is disclosure. Etsy's House Rules say you must state in the listing description when an item was created with the use of AI. Putting that sentence in is cheap. Leaving it out is the easiest way to give Etsy a reason to remove the listing.
Etsy also draws a line around prompts themselves. Selling AI prompts on their own is not allowed, although a listing for AI-generated art can include prompts with the main item. If you sell shirts, this rarely applies to you, but it matters if you were planning to sell prompt packs on the side.
The wording of these policies changes. Etsy's earlier Seller Policy used broader language, and the Creativity Standards page is the current reference. Read it on the day you list, not from memory or from a blog post, including this one.
How do you label an AI T-shirt listing on Etsy?
Write the disclosure in plain words in the description. A short line is enough. For example: This design was created with AI image tools from my own prompts, then prepared for printing by me. Put it where a buyer will read it, near the top of the description, not hidden under care instructions. Honest labeling also protects you if a buyer later asks how the shirt was made.
- Use the Designed by a seller category, because you wrote the prompts and chose the output.
- State how the shirt is produced, for example that it is printed to order by a print-on-demand partner.
- Do not describe the artwork as hand-drawn or hand-painted if it was generated.
- Keep your photos honest. Mockups are fine, but show that they are mockups.
Etsy publishes a separate help article listing reasons a listing can be removed under the Creativity Standards. Read it before your first listing, since it is the closest thing to a checklist Etsy provides.
How much does it cost to sell AI art on Etsy?
Etsy's fees page and its US seller page list the same core charges. These are the US figures; payment processing differs by country.
| Fee | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing | Charged whether or not the item sells; listings expire after four months |
| Transaction fee | 6.5 percent | On the item price plus the shipping and gift wrapping you charge |
| Payment processing | 3 percent plus $0.25 (US) | When you use Etsy Payments; varies with your bank account location |
Print-on-demand costs come on top. The base cost of the blank shirt and printing is taken from each sale by your provider. A shirt priced at 30 dollars does not leave 30 dollars. Work out your margin from a real order, with all fees included, before you list a hundred designs. Etsy also lists other optional charges such as advertising, so check the live fees page.
How do you list an AI T-shirt on Etsy step by step?
- Generate the artwork in a tool whose terms allow commercial use on your plan. Our guide to selling AI art on shirts covers this check.
- Export a transparent PNG at print resolution. Printful states most apparel needs at least 150 DPI, and Printify recommends 300 DPI for PNG and JPEG.
- Open an Etsy shop and connect a print-on-demand provider that supports Etsy, or fulfil orders yourself.
- Upload the file to the provider, choose the shirt and colors, and generate mockups.
- Write the listing: a clear title, an honest description and the AI disclosure sentence.
- Set the price after adding the blank cost, the Etsy fees and your own margin.
- Order one sample shirt yourself and check the print before promoting the listing.
Step seven is the one most new sellers skip, usually because it costs a few dollars and a week of waiting for delivery. A sample shows you whether the contrast works on the fabric and whether fine lines survive printing.
Is Etsy the best place to sell AI art?
Etsy has a large existing audience, which is its main advantage. The cost is competition and rules. Thousands of sellers list shirts, and a new shop with a generic AI design is hard to find. Etsy also gives you only the shop and the rules it sets, so the brand you build lives on its platform.
Other routes trade audience for control. A store you run yourself keeps your customer list but starts with no traffic. A marketplace that sells finished designs, such as Shirt Bazaar, removes the design work and makes each artwork exclusive to one owner, but it is T-shirts only and a claim does not include a printed shirt. If you do sell on Etsy, protect yourself from the quiet risks. Do not use recognizable characters or logos. Keep your generation tool's terms and your plan details on file. Check Etsy's current rules every few months, since AI policy is one of the areas where marketplaces keep adjusting their wording.
