How to Sell AI Art on Shirts
By Shirt Bazaar · Updated
You can usually sell AI art on T-shirts. First confirm that the AI tool's terms allow commercial use, that the image copies no one else's brand or character, and that your sales platform accepts AI work. Then export a transparent PNG at print resolution. Copyright protection for purely AI-made images may be limited.
Can you sell AI art on T-shirts?
In most cases, yes. Nothing about a T-shirt makes AI artwork special. The question is whether you have the right to use the image commercially and whether the place you sell it accepts it. Those are two separate checks, and both can fail independently.
The first check is the tool you used. Some AI tools license commercial use only on paid plans. Recraft, for example, states that images made on its free plan are not licensed for commercial use, while paid plans grant commercial rights. Kittl's pricing page says the same of its free plan. Read the terms of the tool before you print anything. The best AI T-shirt design generator comparison lists what each tool states about this.
The second check is the platform. Etsy allows AI work that comes from your own prompts but requires you to say so in the listing. Print-on-demand providers such as Printify tell you the image must not infringe anyone else's intellectual property. A shirt that shows a recognizable logo or cartoon character will be a problem wherever you sell it, whoever or whatever drew it.
What should you check before you put AI art on a shirt?
- Read the commercial-use terms of the generator. Look for the plan you are on, not only the paid tier.
- Look at the image for anything that belongs to someone else: logos, characters, celebrity faces, brand names, a recognizable artist's signature or style marks.
- Check any text in the image. AI tools still misspell words, and a typo is far worse on a shirt than on a screen.
- Confirm the platform's AI rules. Etsy requires disclosure in the listing description. Other marketplaces have their own rules.
- Decide how you will describe the shirt honestly. Say it is AI-generated where the platform asks you to.
None of this needs a lawyer for a typical design, but it does need five minutes per image. Skipping it is how sellers end up with removed listings or a batch of shirts they cannot sell.
How do you make AI art print-ready?
A good-looking image on screen is not yet a print file. Print providers publish the specs they want, and they differ a little.
| Provider | What it states | What that means for AI art |
|---|---|---|
| Printify | Accepts JPEG, PNG and SVG. Recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG, with product-specific needs shown in its Product Creator. States that artificially inflated DPI does not improve quality. | Do not just change the DPI number on a small image. Generate or upscale at a real larger pixel size. |
| Printful | Most apparel needs at least 150 DPI. PNG is usually best for direct-to-garment because it keeps transparency. Recommends the sRGB color profile. | Export PNG with a transparent background and check that no pale halo is left around the edges. |
| Printify AI generator | Its own image generator produces 1024 by 1024 pixel images, which it upscales at order time. | A raw 1024 pixel image is small for a chest print. Check the print preview for softness. |
Two practical points follow. Start from the largest render your tool offers, and keep the background transparent so no rectangle prints around the artwork. The how to design a shirt with AI guide walks through the generation step in order.
Where can you sell a shirt with AI art on it?
There are three common routes. Each puts a different amount of work on you.
- Your own store connected to a print-on-demand provider. You upload the file, pick the shirt, set a price and the provider prints and ships each order. You handle marketing and customer questions.
- A marketplace listing such as Etsy. Buyers are already there, but you follow the marketplace's AI disclosure rules and pay its fees.
- A marketplace built around the design itself, such as Shirt Bazaar, where the artwork is claimed by one owner. See the last section below.

Who owns the copyright to AI art on a shirt?
This is the part sellers most often skip. In the United States, the Copyright Office's January 2025 report on copyrightability concluded that prompts alone are not enough to make a user the author of an AI output. It also said that human authors can claim copyright in their own contributions that are perceptible in an output, and in creative selection, arrangement or modification of the material.
For a shirt seller, the practical reading is this. You can almost always sell the shirt. What you may not be able to do is stop a copycat from printing the same image, because the image itself may not be protected. Adding real human work, such as redrawing parts, composing several elements or setting original type, gives you a stronger position. The rules differ by country, so treat this as background, not legal advice. The separate guides on who owns AI art and whether AI art is copyrighted go deeper.
Where does Shirt Bazaar fit?
Shirt Bazaar is a marketplace of 1-of-1 AI-generated T-shirt designs. Each design can be claimed once. A claim assigns the commercial rights Shirt Bazaar holds in that exact artwork to the person who claims it, opens a storefront at their handle, and removes the design from sale to anyone else. The claim is for the artwork. A printed shirt is a separate print-on-demand order. See how claiming works for the steps.
If you want to make designs rather than buy them, a free account includes a weekly render allowance, and makers keep 80 percent of the claim price on the free plan. Royalty payouts are not live yet, so earnings are tracked but not paid out. Shirt Bazaar sells T-shirts only and has no editing canvas, so it will not suit you if you want to hand-edit artwork or sell hoodies. Browse the shop to see what a finished design looks like.
Questions
Can I sell AI art I made with ChatGPT or Midjourney on a shirt?
Possibly. It depends on the terms of the tool and your plan. Read the commercial-use terms of the exact service, and check the sales platform's own AI rules before listing.
What file format should AI art be for printing on a T-shirt?
A PNG with a transparent background is the usual choice for direct-to-garment printing. Printful names PNG as usually the best option for this, and Printify accepts PNG, JPEG and SVG.
What resolution does AI art need for a T-shirt?
Printful says most apparel needs at least 150 DPI and Printify recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG files. Raising the DPI number on a small image does not add detail, so start from a large render.
Do I have to say a shirt design is AI-generated?
On Etsy, yes: sellers must disclose AI use in the listing description. Other platforms set their own rules, so read them before you list.
Can I stop others from copying my AI-generated shirt design?
That is uncertain. US Copyright Office guidance says prompts alone do not make you the author, so purely AI-made images may not be protected. Added human work can improve your position.
