How to Design Your Own T-Shirt
By Shirt Bazaar · Updated
To design your own T-shirt, choose a method (template editor, AI generator, a designer, or your own artwork), make one clear graphic, export a PNG with a transparent background, and upload it to a printer or print-on-demand provider. Order a sample to check the print before you sell any.
How can you design your own T-shirt?
There are four common ways to get a design onto a shirt. They trade cost, control and time against each other.
| Method | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Template editor (for example Canva, Kittl, Placeit) | People who want to arrange text and graphics fast | Check the license: some stock elements cannot be used as the whole print, and free plans may be personal use only |
| AI image generator | Original artwork from a written idea | Terms differ by plan; check text spelling, edges and image size |
| Hire a designer | A brand mark or a design you want edited by hand | Cost and time; get the rights in writing |
| Your own drawing or photo | Work that is already yours | Scan or export at high resolution on a clean background |
You can combine them. A common mix is an AI-generated graphic with your own lettering added in an editor. The guide to designing a shirt with AI covers the generator route in detail.
How do you create your own T-shirt design, step by step?
- Decide who the shirt is for and what it should say. A design for a specific group, hobby or place usually works better than a general one.
- Sketch the idea in words or on paper before opening any tool. One subject, one or two lines of text at most.
- Make the artwork with your chosen method. Keep the composition simple and centered.
- Limit your colors. Fewer colors read better from a distance and are easier to print cleanly.
- Check contrast against the shirt color you plan to use. Preview it on both a light and a dark shirt.
- Export a PNG with a transparent background at the largest size available.
- Upload to a printer, order one sample, and check it in daylight before you order more.
If you are using someone else's content inside the design, read the license. Canva's help pages say that Canva content cannot be used on print services that ask you to confirm you own the copyright in the design, because you hold a license to that content, not the copyright. Services that only ask you to confirm you have the right to use the design are acceptable under its terms.
What file do you need for printing a T-shirt?
Printful says PNG is usually the best format for direct-to-garment printing because it supports a transparent background. A JPEG cannot hold transparency, so a transparent design saved as JPEG can print with a white box around it. Printful asks for files in the sRGB color profile and says most apparel needs at least 150 DPI.
Printify accepts JPEG, PNG and SVG. It recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG files, with product-specific details shown in its Product Creator for each print area. Its help center also states that artificially raising a file's DPI does not improve the quality. A small image stays small. Make or export the artwork large from the start.
- Use PNG with a transparent background for most designs.
- Use SVG when your artwork is vector-based and your provider accepts it.
- Keep text away from the very edge of the artwork.
- Avoid soft shadows and gradients that fade to transparent, which Printful advises against.
- Remember that screen colors will not match printed colors exactly.
Should you print one shirt or sell many?
If you only want a shirt for yourself or a group, a custom printer or a print-on-demand provider works. You upload the file, pick the shirt and order. With print on demand, nothing is printed until an order exists, so you carry no stock.
If you want to sell, you need a place for buyers to find it. Options include your own store linked to a provider, a marketplace such as Etsy, or a design marketplace. Printify lists its own pricing as a free plan at 0 dollars a month with paid tiers from 39 dollars a month, or 24.99 dollars a month billed yearly. Etsy charges a listing fee and a transaction fee on top. Our guides on selling AI art on shirts and selling on Etsy go through the details.
Price from a real order, not a guess. Add the blank cost, printing, shipping and platform fees, then see what margin is left. If it is thin, raise the price or pick a method with lower costs before you promote the shirt. A shirt that sells well at no margin is a hobby, which is fine, as long as you know that is what it is. Write the numbers down once so you can compare the next design against them.
What if you do not want to design it yourself?
You can pick a finished design instead. Shirt Bazaar is a marketplace of 1-of-1 AI-generated T-shirt designs. You browse the shop, claim one, and the claim assigns you the commercial rights Shirt Bazaar holds in that exact artwork. Nobody else can claim it, and a storefront opens at your handle. See how claiming works for the steps.
A claim is for the artwork. It does not include a physical shirt, which is a separate print-on-demand order. Shirt Bazaar makes T-shirts only and has no editing canvas. If you want to generate your own, the AI T-shirt design generator needs a free account, and free accounts get 7 renders a week.
Whichever route you choose, the order of work stays the same and none of the steps is optional: a clear idea, clean artwork, a proper file, a sample print and then a sale.
Questions
How do I create my own T-shirt design for free?
Many editors and AI tools have free plans. Free plans often limit commercial use, so check the terms before selling. Shirt Bazaar's free account includes 7 renders a week.
What file type should I use for a T-shirt design?
PNG with a transparent background is the usual choice. Printful names it as usually best for direct-to-garment printing. Printify also accepts JPEG and SVG.
What resolution should a T-shirt design be?
Printful says most apparel needs at least 150 DPI and Printify recommends 300 DPI for PNG and JPEG. Raising the DPI of a small image does not add detail.
Can I sell a T-shirt I designed in Canva?
Often yes, but the content you used matters. Canva states that Canva content cannot be used on print services that require you to own the copyright, so read its licensing help before selling.
Do I need to buy stock before selling custom shirts?
No. With print on demand, the provider prints and ships each shirt after an order, so you hold no inventory.
